BREAKING: CAIR Welcomes Judge’s Ruling that Detained Anti-Genocide Activist Mahmoud Khalil Must Be Released

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a federal judge’s ruling that anti-genocide activist and legal U.S. resident Mahmoud Khalil must be released from detention.

Khalil was detained in March, the first arrest in the Trump administration’s crackdown on students who protested Israel’s genocide in Gaza. His wife gave birth to their first child while he was being held by the government in Louisiana.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“We welcome this ruling as yet another example of our nation’s judicial system pushing back against the Trump administration’s unconstitutional effort to silence all those who speak out against Israel’s genocide in Gaza, and against our government’s unconscionable complicity with that genocide. Mahmoud Khalil’sunlawful and cruel detention deprived him of his liberty and of being with his wife when she gave birth to their first child. This government’s war on First Amendment rights must be challenged by all Americans who value free speech and the Constitution.”

He noted that CAIR previously condemned the detention of Mahmoud Khalil.

CAIR also filed suit against Columbia University on behalf of Khalil.

Last month, CAIR similarly welcomed the recognition by a federal judge that the portion of an immigration law used by the Trump administration to detain Khalil is likely unconstitutional.

Also in May, CAIR welcomed an order by a federal judge demanding the release of ..., who was snatched from the street by masked ICE agents apparently because she co-wrote an editorial calling for her school to divest from the Israeli government over its genocide in Gaza.

CAIR also welcomed  a judge’s order to release Georgetown scholar Badar ..., who was arrested and detained by ICE, apparently due to his wife’s connections to Gaza and criticism of the Israeli government’s genocide.

In April, CAIR welcomed a federal court’s order to release of Mohsen Mahdawi, a permanent United States resident and green card holder from the illegally-occupied West Bank, who was arrested by immigration authorities in Vermont.

CAIR chapters nationwide have spoken out against the campaign to silence criticism of Israel’s genocide.
