The Global Sumud Flotilla is a recent international initiative involving over 50 ships from at least 44 countries attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel's ongoing blockade
WE’RE BAAACK…
. The mission, which began in late August 2025, follows multiple thwarted aid attempts earlier in the year.
Key details about the Global Sumud Flotilla:
  • Departures: Vessels first set sail from Spanish ports on August 31, 2025, but a portion had to return due to bad weather. They departed again on September 2. A second wave of boats is scheduled to meet them in Tunisia on September 4.
  • Participants: The flotilla involves activists, humanitarians, politicians, doctors, artists, and journalists. Notable participants include climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau.
  • International support: Delegations from countries across six continents are participating, including Brazil, South Africa, Malaysia, and numerous European nations. The mission is organized by four major coalitions, including the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC).
  • Purpose: Organizers state the flotilla's purpose is to deliver urgent humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, to the starving population of Gaza. They also aim to draw global attention to and break Israel's blockade, which they describe as illegal and a violation of international law.
  • Israeli response: Previous aid flotilla attempts this year were blocked or intercepted by the Israeli military. In June and July 2025, the Israeli military intercepted two FFC vessels, the Handala and Madleen, in international waters, detaining the passengers and seizing the aid.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is the latest in a series of maritime missions meant to challenge the blockade and deliver aid, following smaller-scale attempts that were stopped by Israeli forces earlier in 2025.
Sumud (Arabic: صمود) is an Arabic word meaning steadfastness, tenacity, or perseverance. It is a Palestinian cultural value and political strategy representing everyday, nonviolent resistance to the Israeli occupation. Sumud involves the determination to stay on one's land despite hardship, a collective act of holding on that is both a personal commitment and a broader form of resilience and defiance.
