Ibrahim Traoré, the President  of Burkina Faso and the Leader of it's military , he  is known for his fiery pan-Africanist rhetoric that is critical of Western and neo-colonial influence in Africa
Captaine Ibrahim Traore

. His speeches have resonated with many, particularly younger Africans, who see him as an anti-imperialist figure following in the footsteps of Thomas Sankara. This reputation for "speaking truth to power" is primarily based on his critique of how African leaders have succumbed to Western pressure, and his calls for African self-sufficiency.

Key themes in President Traoré's Speech
  • Rejection of Western models and demands: At the 2023 Russia-Africa summit, Traoré gained significant attention for a speech in which he criticized African leaders, saying, "we must stop behaving like puppets who dance every time the imperialists pull the strings". This stance extends to his rejection of Western democratic models, advocating instead for a "progressive popular revolution".
  • Emphasis on African sovereignty: Traoré champions the idea that African nations should control their own destinies, free from foreign interference. He has positioned himself as a vanguard of this movement, notably by demanding the withdrawal of French security forces from Burkina Faso and pivoting toward alliances with countries like Russia. He also recently ordered the United Nations to leave Burkina Faso.
  • Call for economic self-sufficiency: Traoré has urged for an end to African dependency on foreign aid and imports, calling for leaders to ensure their people can be food self-sufficient. His administration has recently celebrated progress in this area, such as the unveiling of a new rice processing plant aimed at reducing import dependency.
  • Controversial comparisons to Thomas Sankara: His anti-imperialist stance has led some supporters to compare him to Burkina Faso's  revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara.
His rhetoric taps into widespread anti-colonial and pan-African sentiments, even as his actions draw both strong support and significant skepticism.

“A slave who cannot assume his own revolt does not deserve to be pitied,” says Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso

"A slave who cannot assume his own revolt does not deserve to be pitied." says President Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso...

. Africa is a hungry continent. And how come there are heads of state all over the world begging? These are the questions we are asking ourselves, and we have no answers so far.

We have the opportunity to forge new relationships, and I hope that these relationships can be the best ones to give our peoples a better future.

My generation also asks me to say that because of this poverty, they are forced to cross the ocean to try to reach Europe. They die in the ocean, but soon they will no longer have to cross, because they will come to our palaces to seek their daily bread.

President Capataine Ibrahim Traore
