BELCOURT, N.D. — Earlier this year, Leonard Peltier returned to his home in the dead of winter after nearly 50 years in federal prison, a world away.

Now, in the waning warmth of summer, his relatives from around the country flocked to the annual Peltier and LaFromboise family reunion to reunite with him.

Children played musical chairs with glee as one of the organizers, Sheila Peltier, played classic country tunes throughout the packed hall in Belcourt on Saturday, Aug. 16, about two hours northeast of Minot near the Canadian border.

The man of the hour, 80-year-old Leonard Peltier, was unable to make the trip from his nearby home on Saturday, his daughter said, because he was recovering from a recent leg injury.

The family made sure he wasn’t left out, however, and many went over to visit him during the gathering and bring him a plate of food.

His daughter, Marquetta Shields Peltier, traveled from Kansas to see her father and attend her first family reunion.

“It’s good to see my dad laugh and give his sisters grief because it’s been a long time for them — and for me, never — since we’ve been able to just sit with my dad in his home. We’re blessed,” she said.

Shields Peltier is “proud” of her father being a global symbol of the fight for Indigenous rights, she said, but most of all, she is just proud that he is her dad.

On February 18, 2025, Leonard Peltier—member of the Chippewa and Lakota Nations—was finally released after more than 49 years behind bars, making him the longest-serving Indigenous political prisoner in the United States. While his clemency has been celebrated by advocates worldwide, it also highlights the urgent need for systemic reform to ensure fairness and equity in the US justice system.

Leonard has endured 50 years of medical neglect.

His health has been ignored for decades, leaving him with severe medical conditions, including an aortic aneurysm, poorly managed diabetes, muscular degeneration, prostate infection, and sleep apnea. He is also legally blind due to years of untreated vision problems and has gone over a decade without dental care.

We are calling on Leonard Peltier’s supporters to ensure he receives the care he was denied for half a century. At 79, Leonard urgently needs medical treatment to ensure his well-being in his remaining years.

After sacrificing so much, he deserves to spend the rest of his life in dignity and health.

Leonard Peltier is a warrior and an inspiration to Indigenous Peoples throughout the world. He is a respected and revered Elder and a historical figure such as Sitting Bull, Geronimo, and Nelson Mandela. History will welcome Leonard Peltier as a true survivor and hero.

To support Leonard, we are raising funds to cover his medical expenses and provide him with a trained German Shepherd service dog or guide dog. This dog will help him with mobility, balance, and blood sugar monitoring, while also offering companionship after so many years of isolation.

Stand with Leonard Peltier. Support his healing and justice today.

Background
In the 1975 Pine Ridge shootout, FBI agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams were killed, along with Native American Joe Stuntz, but no action was taken for Stuntz’s death. Leonard Peltier was convicted for the agents' deaths, despite his co-defendants being acquitted on self-defense. Peltier maintains his innocence, claiming he was nowhere near the agents, and believes he was framed. The case is seen as a symbol of systemic injustice against Native Americans.

Peltier's sentence was commuted in January 2025, although he lives under home confinement conditions. The work is not done. Peltier’s case highlights ongoing struggles for justice and reconciliation for Native Americans in the US.
