On July 1st, 2012 a national Muslim women’s organization, the National Association of Muslim American Women (NAMAW), will lead what is being billed as the March and Rally for Global Justice and Peace.   The event, which is an anti-war action, will provide a backdrop for a series of demands that are aimed at essentially ending the so called global war on terrorism.

According to NAMAW, the war is by legal definition, genocide.  This understanding is based upon the definitions of genocide provided by the ICC’s Rome Statute and also the Geneva Conventions, and the description of the war as a war against Islamic extremism.  The argument is that a war launched to wipe out holders of a particular religious ideology or belief is genocide.  According to NAMAW chairwoman Anisa Abd el Fattah, “The war on terrorism creates extremism. Christians, Muslims and Jewish people have been pushed into taking irrational and extreme positions towards one another because of this war. Even non-religious people have been pushed into ideological extremism by this war against people, based upon their religious beliefs. This war is unnatural, it is illegal and the wrong approach to defeating hatred and violence. Hatred and violence cannot be defeated by war crimes” she added.  “It takes global unity of the people and love to defeat the extremes that are threatening us all through acts of terrorism, including state sponsored terrorism” she concluded.

Participants will call for an end to illegal drone attacks, night raids, arbitrary arrests and detentions, indefinite detentions, torture and closure of secret prisons and also the closure of Guantanamo prison.  The group says they are offering forgiveness, reconciliation and a call for greater cooperation between Muslims and non-Muslims in the struggle against all forms of extremism and unjust violence.
