When great trees fall,
  رحمة الله عليه

إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون

rocks on distant hills shudder,

lions hunker down

in tall grasses,

and even elephants

lumber after safety.



When great trees fall

in forests,

small things recoil into silence,

their senses

eroded beyond fear.



When great souls die,

the air around us becomes

light, rare, sterile.

We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,

see with

a hurtful clarity.

Our memory, suddenly sharpened,

examines,

gnaws on kind words

unsaid,

promised walks

never taken.


Great souls die and

our reality, bound to

them, takes leave of us.

Our souls,

dependent upon their

nurture,

now shrink, wizened.

Our minds, formed

and informed by their

radiance,
fall away.

We are not so much maddened

as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of
dark, cold

caves.



And when great souls die,

after a period peace blooms,

slowly and always

irregularly. Spaces fill

with a kind of

soothing electric vibration.

Our senses, restored, never

to be the same, whisper to us.

They existed. They existed.

We can be. Be and be

better. For they existed.

I am so disheartened by the news of the passing of this great man, our esteemed colleague who has worked tirelessly for our people as we seek Self Determination here in the USA.

Musa Dan-Fodio was a visionary. Orchestrating our conference in 2017 where we signed our Declaration of Self Determination and launched the African Descendant Nation. He has been consistently working on our behalf through the years and understood the intricacies of our dilemma and created practical solutions in his approach to using human rights in his law practice.

I am stunned by his passing. So sudden. So soon.

My condolences to his family and friends. May your hearts be comforted.

May the ancestors welcome him and God see his heart. We have lost a giant amongst men and May his life’s work be remembered.

A poem for Musa Dan-Fodio entitled, 

 

MY BROTHER, MY BROTHER by Yero: of the family Bandele, 

"Comes now, this renaissance man, by special appearance,

reserving all rights and privileges,

in this the season of our discontent;

whose life and work we hold up to say, 

 Bruh, "He was him!

- whose vision stood up walls in silhouette,

of fragments in time ,

painted images on the canvas of our minds.

 

Did You Know Him, this Musa Dan Fodio, 

this humble man, rooted in family,

who wore dressed up consciousness 

in Red, Black and Green?"

Did You Know Him, this Musa Dan Fodio:

The athlete, who challenged fields with strength and grace;

the husband, the father, who in the tradition showed the Way...

 

The grandfather whose stoic warmth radiated a passion in the sun on his sun.

Did You Know Him, this Musa Dan Fodio:

the advocate who thirst for human rights - to be transformed in justice anew.

The coach, inspiring pubescent dreams to believe they too could fly;

the revolutionary charged with compass of elders who left the circle,

to ignite change that could never die.

 

The fearless scholar in pursuit of truth in fact,

His legacy etched, a beacon in our sight.

Did you know my brother?

 

Now, as we bid farewell to his mighty soul,

His memory echoes, in an eternal toll.

The renaissance man, once has a jump-shot that was to be cold,

 

My brother, my brother, in your promise Akil now stands

the baton of tomorrow cemented in his hand.

Though your physical form is gone,

your example lives on, 

burrowed in the hearts of those you touched and inspired,

a burning legacy, a flame never to retire.

 

Cassandra Dan-Fodio and your family we'll continue to embrace, 

as our testimony

bears witness by all in this space.

The lessons you taught, the path you made clear.

In our moments of doubt, we'll look forward to your light,
