CAIR Offers Condolences on Passing of Islamic Scholar Dr. Muhammad Adam Al-Sheikh.

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/15/2024) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today offered its condolences on the passing of Islamic scholar and former Imam of the Dar al-Hijrah Mosque in Northern Virginia, Dr. Muhammad Adam Al-Sheikh.

Born in 1945 in Sudan, Dr. Muhammad Adam al-Sheikh was educated in fiqh, or Islamic jurisprudence, and graduated from the Faculty of Sharia and Law at Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan in 1969. He earned a master’s degree at Howard University, an LL.M. from George Washington University, and a PhD from Temple University.

Dr. al-Sheikh was one of the founders of the Dar al-Hijrah Mosque and chaired the North American Fiqh Council of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) for years and participated in its membership for many more years. He also was a resident scholar at Dar Alnoor. Even during the years of his illness and his old age, and he is also a former president of the Islamic Judicial Council of the Association of Sharia Scholars in North America (SSANA).

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون..

“To God we belong and to Him we return. We express our condolences to the entire Muslim community on the passing of the esteemed scholar, leader and pioneer Dr. Muhammad Adam al-Sheikh. We pray that God reward Dr. al-Sheikh for his efforts and service and enter him into paradise. We also pray that He aids and grants solace to his family and loved ones.
