First African American Female Dentist...Ida Gray Nelson Rollins...

'#ToothTruthsTuesday #BlackHistoryMonth Ida Gray Nelson Rollins, born in Clarksville, Tennessee March 4th 1867, was the first African American woman dentist. Ida became an orphan as an infant when her teen mother, Jennie Gray passed away. Ida’s white father, whose name is unknown, was not present during her childhood or education. After the death of Ida’s mother, she was raised by her aunt, Caroline Gray. While in high school, Ida worked as a seamstress & dressmaker, as well as in the dental office of Jonathan & William Taft. Ida Gray graduated from Gaines Public High School in 1887 when she was 20 years old. Ida’s part-time job at this dental office groomed her ambitions to become a dentist. During this time one of her bosses, Jonathan Taft, was the dean of the Ohio College of Dentistry. In 1870, he became the first dean of the Dental College at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As dean, he was a ardent supporter of admitting women to dental school & as a result, 3 years later, in 1873, the first Caucasian woman was enrolled. The mentorship provided by William Taft set the foundation for Rollins to become the first African American woman to graduate from a dental school. The experience she gained working in Taft’s dental office aided her in passing the entrance exam into the University of Michigan. Ida enrolled on October 1887, & three years later, she became the very first African American woman to graduate with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in the United States. After graduation in 1890, Ida returned to Cincinnati, Ohio & opened a private dental practice. She remained there until 1895 when she married Sanford Nelson, a Spanish-American War veteran. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois where Dr. Nelson Rollins set up a practice serving a clientele of woman & men of all races. She became the first African American, male or female, to practice dentistry in Chicago. She was also very active in professional associations & women’s clubs & she mentored other African-American women who wanted to pursue professional careers. Rollins died on May 3, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. She was 86 years old. She was a true trailblazer.'
