Bilal Mahmud is a distinguished U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a pioneering leader within the Muslim community,

renowned for his dedication to documenting Islam in America. Born in Richmond, Virginia, and raised in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1969, serving in South Vietnam, where he was introduced to Islam. After returning home, Bilal embraced the faith in 1973 (1393 A.H.) and joined the Islamic Party in North America, gaining foundational Islamic education steeped in classical traditions from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

In 1981 (1400 A.H.), Bilal played a pivotal role in establishing the Al-Farooq Masjid in Atlanta,(https://alfarooqmasjid.org/)  the first mosque constructed from the ground up in the city's Muslim community. Recognizing the importance of Islamic education for future generations, he co-founded the Dar-un-Noor School. As a founding member of The Atlanta Mosque (est. 1977), Bilal has been actively involved as a Board Member, overseeing property acquisition, zoning negotiations, and the construction of both the original and current mosque buildings.

Beyond his work in community leadership, Bilal is an independent journalist, photographer, and reporter, maintaining several blogs and websites to chronicle the evolving narrative of Islam in America. His endeavors reflect a lifelong commitment to faith, service, and community empowerment, making him a significant figure in the contemporary discourse on Islam and American society.
