A new variant of Influenza A (H3N2) known as

subclade K is driving a surge in flu cases during the 2025-2026 season. This "super flu" strain is highly contagious and has mutated to evade pre-existing immunity, resulting in higher hospitalization rates, particularly among children. Symptoms are severe and similar to typical flu but may feel more sudden.

Key Details About the New Flu Variant (Subclade K):

• • Dominant Strain: Subclade K is responsible for over 90% of influenza A cases in the U.S. as of January 2026.
  • Key Symptoms: Rapid onset of high fever, chills, severe muscle/body aches, fatigue, headache, and cough.
  • High Risk Groups:
    While it affects all ages, children (0-4) and school-aged kids are experiencing high infection rates
    .

• Vaccine Effectiveness: The mutations in subclade K developed after the 2025-2026 vaccine formula was determined, potentially reducing its effectiveness. However, vaccination is still advised to reduce severity.

• Treatment: Antivirals are effective, but testing is recommended to differentiate from COVID-19.
