 Vanessa Williams (Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series), and John Legend (Outstanding Album) were among the big winners at the prestigious 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards on Friday, March 4, in Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium.

Joining the Hollywood A-List film, television, and music stars as award winners was Michelle Alexander, associate professor at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Alexander received the Image Award in the Outstanding Literary Work-Non-Fiction category for her recent book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (The New Press, 2010).

The NAACP Image Awards, produced by National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is the nation’s preeminent multi-cultural awards show celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts (television, recording, literature, motion picture, and writing and directing), as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors. From Ray Charles to Michael Jackson to Oprah Winfrey, the Image Awards have honored some of the greatest and most accomplished African Americans in entertainment.

Other winners in the literary division included best-selling novelist Terry McMillan (Outstanding Literary Work-Fiction), acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni (Outstanding Literary Work-Poetry), and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice (Outstanding Literary Work-Youth/Teens).

Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell received the NAACP President’s Award for special achievement in public service.

Hosted by Wayne Brady and Holly Robinson Peete, the Image Awards were telecast on Fox.
