Imam Omar Suleiman: I Don't Know If I Can Delete From My Favorites...

I dont know if I can delete his contact from my favorites. I would miss his call sometimes because of my “do not disturb”, so I had to put his prison collect call under favorites. But I can’t delete it.
Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin
“Oh Allah grant Aafia to Aafia and Sabrun Jamil to Jamil…”
This was my prayer always. Aafia meaning respite, and Aafia being Aafia Siddiqui. And Sabrun Jamil being beautiful patience, and Jamil being Imam Jamil Al-Amin.
Now Imam Jamil is gone from this world. And I can’t help but feel the weight of failure. I trust Allah is rewarding him in ways we can’t imagine, but I also fear how we let him down. I hate that we waited for him to die for the tributes to pour in. It took a small protest a few years ago in Tucson for the Imam to get just enough attention to get a cataract surgery to restore his vision. I don’t think I’ll ever stop questioning whether we did enough for him to be free. These last few months it felt so close. It was just a matter of paperwork (Kairi his son was told). Then suddenly he’s not eating. And he’s gone. Al hamdulilah he’s free. But what about us?
I’m terrified of Aafia dying in prison and us asking the same question. The same for Ghassan Elashi and Shukri Abubaker. All of them are people that have languished in cells under false charges. And I could care less about how Islamophobes will eat this to slander me with what they slandered them. They’re all innocent.
Just like our new prisoners. Marwan Marouf, Leqaa Kordia, Yakub Ira and more. I know others in there but I won’t share their names. But the stories are many. Are we doing enough? I’m often asked what’s my one advice for Muslims in America. It’s this: Don’t abandon your prisoners. It’s a horrible feeling to be forgotten in a cell by a community you gave everything for.
I’m sorry Kairi, we let you down. I’m sorry Aafia and family were letting you down. I’m sorry Shukri and Ghassan and the HLF families, we’re letting you down. May Allah compensate you all accordingly, and change the condition of our hearts to support you.
