Imam Jamil Abdullah al-Amin:
A Martyr for Justice Transitions
By: Imam Khalid Abdul-Fattah Griggs
“I seek truth over a lie; I seek justice over injustice; I seek righteousness over the rewards of evil doers, and I love Allah more than I love the state.”
Imam Jamil Abdullah Al Amin
When Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah (peace be upon him) received the revelation that An-Najashi (Ashama ibn Abjar), the ruler of Ethiopia who protected the Muslims fleeing Makkah, had died, he was reported to have said,
“A righteous man has died.”
On Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 3:00 pm, Imam Jamil Abdullah al-Amin departed from this world, relieved of his divinely mandated lifelong assignment as a courageous voice and fearless leader for justiceacross the American landscape. The freedom that he was denied through torturous, inhumane conditions of incarceration for over two decades has ended with his returning to our Lord, Allah, whom he uncompromisingly worshiped for the last 54 years. His towering physical stature was a mirror of the depth of his commitment to the victims of systemic oppression perpetrated by those who foolishly attempt to usurp the ultimate authority of Allah subhanawata’la that forbids the exploitation of the most economically and socially marginalized members of society.
In his younger years, his extraordinary ability to rap, vocally express clever, witty descriptions of people or conditions, earned him the name Rap Brown, Brown being his family’s surname. Strongly influenced by his activist older brother Ed Brown, a student at Howard University, the young 19-year-old moved from New Orleans to Washington, DC, where he joined his brother in the student organization, NAG, Howard University’s campus affiliate of SNCC, Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. He would later become the fifth and final Chairman of SNCC, where he built on his national reputation as a fearless spokesman for ending the oppressive socio-political system in the United States that denied full citizenship and human rights to Black people, poor Whites, and other non-White people in the country. In what was considered a symbolic alliance between the Black Panther Party and SNCC in 1968, he briefly served as the Black Panther Party's Minister of Justice.
Before embracing Islam in 1971 at the hands of Imam and prison Chaplain for the state of New York, Al-Amin Abdul Latif, Imam Jamil was incarcerated for a politically motivated attempted robbery of a New York City bar, where heroin was being peddled to the destruction of the African American community. After his release from prison in 1975, Imam Jamil moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he established a community store and Community Masjid in southwest Atlanta. Imam Jamil encouraged members of the mosque
to secure housing close to Community Masjid. The neighborhood was rife with widespread open-air drug peddling and violence, resulting in social deterioration of the community. Under Imam Jamil’s fearless leadership, mosque members were able to rid the neighborhood of the open-air drug sales, reestablishing that section of West End Atlanta as a safe area for neighbors, especially the children. Also, during this period, Imam Jamil, along with Imam Al-Amin Abdul Lateef, formed Al-Ummah. This national Muslim organizationwas built on the work of its predecessor, the New York-based Dar ul Islam Movement.
It is an unfortunate, recurring social phenomenon that Muslim social change agents in this country are rarely acknowledged for the magnitude and influence of their work while they are alive. Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Sr. Safiya Bukhari, and our recently transitioned champion for social justice, Imam Talib Abdur Rashid, from the Village of Harlem, are just a small representation of this group. May the benefits that we derive from their work be rewarded by Allah subhanawata’la as sadaqah jariyah, continuous charity on their behalf. We pray that Allah subhanawata’la forgive his shortcomings, make his grave spacious and filled with light, and grant him Jannatul Firdous.
