Islamophobia. Neither individuals nor organizations within our community will be intimidated. We will not distance ourselves from CAIR — we will stand with CAIR. We will rally behind an organization that has defended our rights for decades. And we will bring every resource necessary to ensure CAIR can protect itself, just as it has tirelessly protected the Muslim community for the past 30 years.

Full statement: MAS Condemns Abbot's Islamophobic Stunt

The Muslim American Society (MAS) unequivocally condemns Governor Abbott’s (r Texas) reckless and Islamophobic attack on the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), one of the nation’s foremost civil rights organizations. His attempt to smear and criminalize a respected institution is not only baseless, but it is also a disgraceful abuse of power by a sitting governor. This is political theater at its worst: weaponizing fear, pandering to bigotry, and endangering the civil liberties of millions of Americans.

For over thirty years, CAIR has defended Americans’ constitutional rights, confronted discrimination, supported vulnerable communities, and fought tirelessly against Islamophobia. Governor Abbott’s statement is a political stunt meant to silence civil rights advocacy at a time when anti-Muslim hate has escalated across the country.

Such abhorrent rhetoric does not just target an organization; it puts Americans directly in harm’s way and sets a chilling precedent for the targeting of civil rights groups nationwide. We refuse to allow elected officials to normalize bigotry under the guise of governance. 

MAS stands with CAIR and with all communities who are being targeted by political opportunism. We call on elected officials, civic leaders, and institutions of conscience to reject this dangerous and Islamophobic declaration by the governor and to stand firmly on the side of justice.

In recent years, CAIR has successfully sued Governor Abbott three different times. The federal lawsuits we won blocked Abbott from violating the First Amendment rights of Texas Muslims who dared to criticize the Israeli government's abuses.

 

Now Greg Abbott is retaliating against CAIR.

 

Yesterday, the Texas governor issued a defamatory and unconstitutional proclamation that seeks to ban CAIR and CAIR-Texas from operating in Texas.

This publicity stunt masquerading as government policy cannot stand or spread to other states.

 

CAIR is now preparing to sue Greg Abbott so that we can defeat him in court for the fourth time in a row and so that American Muslims across our nation can continue to organize and speak freely, insha Allah (God willing).

 

Meanwhile, we remain squarely focused on protecting and defending you. For 31 years, we have acted as a shield for the American Muslim community. That means we sometimes take arrows. That's part of the job and we are grateful for it.

Statement of Solidarity with CAIR

We stand in solidarity with the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights organization, in the wake of Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s designating CAIR-TX as a "foreign terrorist and criminal organization" and associating it with the Muslim Brotherhood.

We reaffirm our commitment to civil liberties, free speech and the rights of all Americans to enjoy their freedom of organization without fear of being wrongly labelled or targeted. 

This designation is an attack on democracy, especially the Bill of Rights and is utterly unacceptable. 

We urge all Americans, faith leaders, civil society advocates, and elected officials to defend Muslim Americans' right to organize and enjoy their first amendment.
