James Baldwin Speaks For African Americans

The Red, Black, and Green Pan-African flag, created by Marcus Garvey and the UNIA in 1920, became a lasting symbol of Black liberation, unity, and pride. It was adopted in response to the racist song “Every Race Has a Flag but the Coon,” affirming Black identity.

In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded Negro History Week during the second week of February, launching the precursor to Black History Month to promote the study of African American achievements. Coinciding with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, this initiative highlighted the growing impact of Black culture during the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Migration.
