Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (1939–2026) was the second and longest-serving Supreme Leader of Iran, holding power from 1989 until his death in February 2026

. He was a key figure in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, previously serving as president (1981–1989), and was known for his staunch anti-Western, specifically anti-US and anti-Israel, policies.

Who Was Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (1939–2026)

• Rise to Power: A cleric born into a religious family, he was a loyal disciple of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and was imprisoned multiple times by the Shah’s regime.
• Presidency (1981–1989): Survived a 1981 assassination attempt that left him permanently disabled.
• Supreme Leader (1989–2026): Succeeded Ayatollah Khomeini as the highest authority in Iran.
• Policies: He overseen the brutal suppression of domestic dissent, expanded Iran's influence in the Middle East, and was the ideological leader of the "Axis of Resistance" against Israel.
• Death: He was killed at age 86 during US and Israeli air strikes on February 28, 2026, following heightened tensions, including attacks by regional proxies against Israel after October 2023.
