epidemiologist who is the Democratic nominee in the 2026 United States Senate election in Michigan.^[2] A progressive Democrat, he was the director of the Department of Health, Human, and Veterans Services of Wayne County, Michigan, from 2023 to 2025, and was a candidate in the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial election.

El-Sayed is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Oriel College, Oxford, attending them on a full-tuition scholarship and a Rhodes Scholarship, respectively. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University.

El-Sayed was an assistant professor of epidemiology at Columbia University from 2014 to 2015. He was the executive director of the Detroit Health Department and Health Officer for the City of Detroit from 2015 to 2017. His publications in public health include three books and several academic journal articles.

@abdulelsayed has won Michigan’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, becoming the first Muslim to secure a major party’s nomination for the United States Senate.

The physician and public health leader defeated Congresswoman Haley Stevens in one of the country’s most closely watched primary races, overcoming millions of dollars in outside spending from pro-Israel groups opposing his campaign.

El-Sayed ran on a progressive platform centered on Medicare for All, getting corporate money out of politics and ending unconditional U.S. military support for Israel.

He will now advance to the November general election, where he could become the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate.
