Though the women who made up two-thirds of the Black Panther Party took part in rallies and voter registrations, newsrooms and grass-roots political campaigns, their most direct contributions have gone all but unheralded: the more than 60 Community Survival Programs that provided neglected Black Americans with life-sustaining meals, education and health care.
