The United States has a responsibility to protect its citizens, Braedon Peluso, Christian Smalls, Frank Romano, Huwaida Arraf, Jacob Berger, Robert Suberi and Waad Aal Musa from israeli or NATO interception of any kind while they sail to Gaza on board the 'Handala'.

The vessel carries unarmed civilians and humanitarian cargo including baby formula and other life- saving aid for Palestinians in Gaza. It poses no threat and operating in full accordance with humanitarian and human rights law.

The recent seizure of the Handala, a Gaza-bound activist boat, by Israeli forces in international waters means several things:

 

1. Interception of a humanitarian mission: The Handala, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was carrying humanitarian aid like baby formula, diapers, food, and medicine intended for the Gaza Strip. This mission aimed to challenge the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza.
2. Detention of activists and journalists: Israeli forces boarded the Handala, detaining the international crew and passengers, including journalists and activists from various countries, notably Americans. Among them are US citizens like labor leader Christian Smalls. Some reports mention a larger number of US citizens, with one source stating seven US citizens were aboard. Two of those detained were dual US and Israeli citizens and were transferred to police custody.
3. Claims of illegality and violations: The seizure in international waters has been condemned as a violation of international law by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and other organizations. Activists on board the Handala had previously stated they believed an interception would be a violation of international maritime law.
4. Escalation of efforts to deliver aid to Gaza: The Handala seizure follows a similar incident in June involving another Freedom Flotilla boat, the Madleen, which was also intercepted by the Israeli military while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza. These events highlight ongoing attempts to challenge the blockade and deliver aid to the Palestinian territory amidst a worsening humanitarian situation.
5. International condemnation and calls for release: Human rights groups and organizations are condemning the interception and demanding the release of the detainees and respect for international law.

According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which organized the voyage of the Handala, activating the emergency protocol onboard the vessel meant that the crew's exact location could be pinpointed by those monitoring the mission
