 PURPOSE:

The Rising Star Scholarship fund awards scholarships to American Muslim students attending a 4 year university in

 pursuit of a Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree. Students must be enrolled in a US institution.

 

ELIGIBILITY:

1. Must be a Muslim Woman
2. Must be a Citizen or Permanent Resident of U.S. living within the states of Georgia, North Carolina, or South Carolina
3. Must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average
4. Must be an active member of her community

GUIDELINES:

Scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis. The scholarship recipient will be announced during the 2011 Sisters Empowerment Conference in Greensboro, NC. The monies will be given directly to the student.

APPLICATION MATERIALS:

1. A sealed copy of one’s university transcript
2. A letter of recommendation from a professor
3. A signed copy of the application
4. A short essay detailing the applicants understanding of the following:
5. Star and Crescent’s Goals and Mission (which can be found on the website)
6. How those goals are applicable to building an Islamic future, and
7. How furthering one’s education will help the community and family

SELECTION PROCESS:

All applications must be submitted via US postal mail no later than April 16th 2011. Applications are reviewed within a 2-3 month period and scholarships will generally be awarded during the first week of August. The selection criteria are based on:

1. Academic record (grades and achievement scores)
2. School activities (sports, clubs, etc.)
3. Extracurricular activities, especially in the Muslim community (volunteering, work, etc.)
4. Any extenuating and unusual circumstances related to the applicant
5. Other factors that may help in distinguishing the applicant based on the information submitted

AMOUNT:

Each scholarship awarded will be a minimum of $250 annually to be paid in one lump sum or in two equal installments, depending upon funds.

DEADLINE:

Applications must be postmarked April 16th 2011. The deadline is the date after which applications will no longer be accepted. The Star & Crescent Society uses the postmarked date to determine mailed entries.

RENEWAL PROCESS:

This scholarship is not renewable. Previous scholarship recipients cannot re-apply.
