As of January 2026, Mali is experiencing a severe,, chronic fuel shortage driven by a blockade by al-Qaida-linked militants

(JNIM) targeting supply routes from neighboring countries, which has reduced fuel inflows from up to 6,000 trucks monthly to significantly lower numbers

. Over 100 trucks have been burned, creating a crisis that has triggered strict rationing (72-hour limits for cars), spiked fuel prices by over 400%, and caused widespread electricity outages. 

Key Aspects of the Crisis:

• Targeted Blockade: Since September 2025, militants have attacked and burned hundreds of fuel trucks, particularly in the south and west, targeting routes from Ivory Coast and Senegal.
• Economic & Social Impact: The crisis has crippled the economy, causing long queues, closing schools and universities, and leading to severe power shortages, sometimes reducing electricity supply to only six hours a day in some areas.
• Government Response: The junta government has introduced rationing (72 hours for cars, 48 hours for motorcycles) and is relying on military-escorted convoys.
• Security & Geopolitics: Russian mercenaries from the Africa Corps are reportedly assisting with convoy security. The crisis has increased pressure on the regime of Col. Assimi Goïta, with some reports suggesting discreet negotiations with militants to lift the blockade.
• Travel Advisory: Foreign governments have advised against all travel to Mali due to the fuel crisis, high risk of terrorism, and potential for violent incidents.
