ROANOKE RAPIDS — Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Lawrence Wiggins said Friday investigators are keeping “everything on the table” as they investigate the death of a 38-year-old man found deceased on Roanoke Avenue.

Wiggins held a press conference Friday afternoon regarding the death of Demetrius Eugene Fleming, who was found deceased earlier in the day at 1926 Roanoke Ave.

Police responded to the address after receiving a report of an attempted suicide and found Fleming deceased and connected to a ligature.

Halifax County EMS and the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department also responded to provide medical aid. Fleming was determined to be deceased at the scene.

Wiggins said police are treating the case as an open equivocal death investigation, meaning investigators are not working from an assumption about how Fleming died.

“Everything is on the table, and we’re pursuing any and all leads that are available to us,” Wiggins said...

HELP NEEDED

A family is grieving the sudden loss of Demetrius Eugene Fleming while remembering him not for the circumstances surrounding his death, but for the love, laughter and generosity he gave to those around him.

Fleming was found deceased during the early morning hours of August 21. He was found hanging from a ligature from a tree in Roanoke Rapids. The circumstances around his sudden passing are still being investigated.

Now, as his loved ones struggle to process an unimaginable loss, they are also facing the unexpected financial burden of laying him to rest.

But to Fleming’s family, his life was about so much more than the way it ended.

They describe him as a cheerful and funny man who loved his children, family, friends and neighbors deeply. He was someone who tried to help others whenever he could and who, even during difficult times of his own, continued to give.

His family says Fleming had an incredible determination when it came to his children. Even when circumstances were difficult and it seemed there was little left to give, he somehow found a way to keep going and make ends meet.

That strength, love and devotion are what his family hopes people will remember.

“Demetrius was more than a father,” the his daughter states, describing the lasting impression he left on his community and the people who knew him.

Now his family is asking the community to return some of the kindness Fleming showed others throughout his life.

A fundraising goal of $9,000 has been established to help cover funeral and burial expenses and allow his loved ones to give him a proper final resting place.

For those unable to donate, the family says simply sharing the fundraiser would also mean a great deal.

Behind every fundraiser like this is a family facing a reality they never expected … children mourning a father, relatives mourning someone they loved and friends trying to understand how someone who brought laughter into their lives is suddenly gone.

For Fleming’s loved ones, the days ahead will undoubtedly be difficult. But through their grief, they are choosing to remember the man who smiled through hardships, fought to provide for his children and offered a helping hand whenever he could.

His family hopes the community will now surround them with that same spirit of compassion.

Demetrius Eugene Fleming leaves behind more than memories. He leaves behind children who loved him, family and friends who will miss him, and a legacy of kindness that those closest to him say will not be forgotten.
