Ernesto "Che" Guevara remains one of the most iconic and controversial figures of the 20th century, a revolutionary
Che
whose image has transcended politics to become a global symbol of rebellion, idealism, and resistance. Born on June 14, 1928, in Rosario, Argentina, into a middle-class family with leftist leanings, Guevara initially pursued a career in medicine. His early life was marked by a restlessness and a profound curiosity about the poverty and social injustices plaguing Latin America.
A pivotal moment in his radicalization was his two-year motorcycle journey across South America, starting in 1951. Documented in his memoirs, The Motorcycle Diaries, this trip exposed him firsthand to the widespread exploitation of the poor, indigenous populations, and workers. Witnessing abject suffering and the stark inequality created by capitalist systems solidified his belief that only armed revolution could redress these historical wrongs. Upon graduating from the University of Buenos Aires in 1953, he committed himself fully to revolutionary activism.
Guevara's path led him to Guatemala, where he witnessed the 1954 CIA-backed coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán, a government that had dared to enact land reform. This event confirmed his conviction that the United States was the primary impediment to social progress in Latin America. It was in Mexico City in 1955 that he met Fidel Castro and immediately joined the Cuban revolutionary movement, the 26th of July Movement, as the expedition's doctor. His bravery and commitment during the initial guerrilla campaign in the Sierra Maestra mountains quickly earned him Castro's trust and the affectionate nickname "Che," a colloquial Argentine interjection. He rose rapidly through the ranks, eventually becoming a Comandante (Major), leading a crucial column of fighters, and playing a decisive role in the final victory of the Cuban Revolution in January 1959.
Following the triumph, Che was instrumental in establishing the new socialist state in Cuba. He held several high-ranking positions, including President of the National Bank and Minister of Industries, where he spearheaded radical land reform and nationalized key industries. His time as a government official, however, was marked by pragmatic challenges and a strong ideological drive to create what he termed the "New Man"—a citizen motivated by moral incentives rather than material gain. He also gained international notoriety for his role in the revolutionary tribunals that executed alleged war criminals and opponents of the revolution. As Cuba's chief economic emissary, he traveled extensively, promoting the Cuban model and sharply criticizing US foreign policy and imperialism at international forums, including the United Nations in 1964.
Despite his powerful position, Che remained the eternal revolutionary, feeling that the bureaucratization of the Cuban state detracted from the true revolutionary spirit. In 1965, he resigned from all his official Cuban posts and vanished, leaving behind a farewell letter to Castro that expressed his desire to take the revolution to other parts of the world. His next mission took him to the Congo, intending to support a socialist insurgency, but this effort failed due to logistical challenges and local political infighting. His final, and most famous, revolutionary campaign began in late 1966 in Bolivia. Working with a small band of Cuban and Bolivian guerrillas, his goal was to spark a continent-wide "two, three, many Vietnams" against imperialism. However, the mission was plagued by lack of support from the local communist party, difficult terrain, and the effective counterinsurgency efforts of the Bolivian Army, which was advised by the CIA. On October 8, 1967, Che was captured in the Quebrada del Yuro. He was executed the following day in the village of La Higuera, Bolivia, on the orders of the Bolivian government.
Che Guevara's legacy is complex and fiercely debated. To his supporters, he is the embodiment of anti-imperialist struggle, self-sacrifice, and principled socialist idealism—a figure who gave up comfort and power to fight for the oppressed. His image, captured by photographer Alberto Korda in the iconic Guerrillero Heroico photograph, has become a ubiquitous symbol of rebellion. Critics, however, point to his authoritarian tendencies, the political executions carried out under his command, and the economic failures of the policies he championed in Cuba, viewing him as a ruthless ideologue responsible for human rights abuses. Nonetheless, his writings on guerrilla warfare (Guerrilla Warfare), his political essays, and his defiant life continue to inspire and provoke, cementing his status as one of history's most compelling and enduring revolutionary figures.
