Remembering Sonya Massey

This week, we watched yet another police bodycam recording in horror. In the footage, recorded July 6, 2024, 36-year-old Sonya Massey from Illinois is shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy after calling 911 for assistance. She feared that a potential intruder was lurking near her home. In response to her plea for help, she was killed.

Sonya’s death is tragic, unacceptable, and heart wrenching.

It is also devastating that Sonya’s death is but the latest in a traumatizing history of murders by the police. The names are too familiar to us now. Sandra Bland. Breonna Taylor. Eric Garner. Michael Brown. George Floyd. There are too many names to list here, and too many names are still unknown.

How many times must we raise our voices in protest? How many times must we take to the streets? How many times must we tuck our children in at night, unsure of how to explain what happened? One Black life taken is one too many. What we are seeing is, and has been, an epidemic.

As we demand justice for Sonya, we also call for the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. After being introduced in 2021, the Act was reintroducedin May 2024. This legislation would hold police accountable, address racial profiling, and make it easier for the federal government to prosecute police misconduct cases successfully.

This Act must be passed. It will save lives. If it had passed already, Sonya might still be alive today. She should be alive today.
