CHAPTER 1 

THE FOUNDATION OF THE RELIGIOUS AND POLITICAL IDENTITY  OF THE ISLAMIC PARTY IN NORTH AMERICA 

The Islamic Party in North America was a grassroots political organization whose  main agenda and perspective were informed by the religion of Islam, particularly from a  movement-based perspective. Founded officially in December 1971, the IPNA‟s main  concerns were erecting a political body to assist in the establishment of a comprehensive  Islamic lifestyle in the West. Part of this effort included a desire for community activism  and organizing around issues of poverty, hunger, and disproportionate wealth. The  organizational philosophy of the IPNA was one that included the religious and political  articulations of global (Islamic) thinkers such as Sayyid Qutb and Mawlana Maududi, as  well as the social-political ideology of more domestic figures such as Malik Shabazz  (Malcolm X). The organizational “training” regimen that the IPNA membership received  from its leadership included the writings of these figures as well as lectures from  prominent figures such as Malik Ben Nabi. Furthermore, a deep and wide study of Quran  and hadiths was included. As a result of their intense approach to learning and study, the  IPNA was negatively characterized as a group of intellectuals by rival organizations. Yet it should be understood that the intense study that occurred within the IPNA was  accompanied by an equally intense expectation of work.
