Sheikh Omar Mukhtar Resistance Leader Libya

"We will never surrender. We win, or we die," were the immortal words of Omar al-Mukhtar, a symbol of resistance against Italian colonialism in Libya.

Known as the Lion of the Desert, Mukhtar led a fierce campaign for over two decades, fighting to defend his homeland from foreign occupation. His guerrilla tactics and leadership kept the vastly superior Italian forces at bay.

Despite his advanced age, Mukhtar’s commitment to freedom never faltered. After years of relentless struggle, he was eventually captured by the Italians in 1931. His trial was swift and meant to send a message.

Omar al-Mukhtar was publicly executed by hanging at the age of 73, but rather than breaking the resolve of his people, his martyrdom only strengthened their will to resist.

Omar al-Mukhtar's legacy has transcended time, inspiring generations with his courage and sacrifice. His remarkable life was depicted in the 1980 film "Lion of the Desert" starring Anthony Quinn. To this day, Mukhtar remains a national hero in Libya and a global icon of resistance against oppression
