ANOTHER SELDOM CITED QUOTE FROM OUR MARTYRED LEADER ( my apologies in advance for a long post):
"Our people have not only a voter registration drive on here for Harlem; we also have a voter education drive, to educate the masses of our people into the science of politics, and what politics is supposed to produce for us, what the politician is supposed to do for us. Then we will have a better understanding of whether or not these politicians are producing or whether they are fulfilling their promises.
" Once we get our people actively engaged in politics, not just following the political machines, but involved in politics with an understanding of what they are doing, why they are doing it it, what they should be getting out of it, and their responsibility in the political arena, we feel then that we will be in a better position to bring pressure on the politicians who now exploit our people and perpetuate conditions of poverty and slums and vice and other forms of crime that exist in the Harlem community
" We believe that we can do this by carrying on an education program, where politics is concerned, among the masses to make them see what those who now control the political picture are doing to them.
( question: " Are you going to go out to register people as Democrats, or Republicans, or what, Are you going to fight the party machines?")
" We're going to encourage our people to register as independent voters. First become registered.
(response: ) "We find that most Negroes in that collaboration ( with "the powers that be") end up being collaborated right on out of the picture".
- El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz/Malcolm X July 4, 1964 " Harlem and the Political Machines"
( a radio broadcast on WLIB radio, NYC) reprinted from Malcolm X: By Any Means Necessary
My commentary: It was true then. Its true now. Our people have not yet learned how to weaponize the vote locally, state-wide, and nationally, in their own interest.
So since our people have in most cases not been politically educated in consequence of a sustained assault upon the Black Power movement, that advocated for following this domestic strategy articulated by Malik Shabazz/Malcolm X ( simultaneously with an international strategy designed to bring the US before the World Court , based upon its violation of the human rights of Americans of African descent), other interests have weaponized OUR vote in THEIR interest. The solution to this problem doesn't lie with non-voting. It begins with education by us for us, just like Shabazz/X said.
Two practical existing models of this already exist. It is not coincidental that the current mayors of two cities - one in the North and one in the South, are the sons of leaders who learned this lesson.
Chokwe Antar Lumumba is the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. His father Chokwe Lumumba, who was Jackson, Miss. mayor before him, was a human rights lawyer who had been a Vice-President of the Republic of New Afrika ("Free the land!").
Ras Baraka is mayor of Newark ( New Ark), N J. His late father was Amiri Baraka, founder of the Committee for a Unified Newark (CFUN), and tje Congress of African People ( which I was a me.ber of as a youth).
These are young men with a consciousness shaped outside of the Civil Rights paradigm, leading teams of young men and women, in governance of two cities with a predominantly Black population.
These young people are pushing the ongiing domestic Democratic experiment on one level. 20-25 million people have protested in the streets since the murder of George Floyd, to push it on another level.
Domestically we the people must continue to hold government accountable for its violation of our civil , constitutional, and human rights. Internationally the struggle must continue to do the same before the International Court. This was the two pronged political strategy advocated by Malcolm X.
