Who Could Be The Next President...

Since May 19, the Islamic Republic has been without its president and the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, of his potential successor. It is now the latter's son, Mojtaba, who seems to be pulling the strings of the national political scene and who appears to be the real leader in the shadows.

The death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19 has had the effect of a tsunami in the mysteries of Iranian power. Mainly because the deceased was expected to be the big favourite to succeed the current supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who is 85 years old and in declining health. Raisi, considered the most docile president in Iran's history, was a close confidant of the Revolutionary Guard, his hierarchical superior, who had been in office since 1989.

Six months ago, however, the "assembly of experts" would have withdrawn Raïssi from the list of potential successors, because of its drop in popularity and its poor socio-economic management of the country. But an intensive lobbying led by a fringe of religious influential would have restored the course of things. His brutal disappearance is completely rebuilding the cards today and opens the door to unprecedented intestine struggles within the Islamic Republic. Especially since the supreme guide does not seem to have a joker card.
