Ethiopian forces, led by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Titu, defeated invading Italian troops, securing Ethiopia's sovereignty against European colonization. This victory, fueled by national unity and strategic prowess, made Ethiopia a symbol of African independence and pan-African resistance, profoundly challenging colonial narratives. 

Key Aspects of the Adwa Movement:

• Context: Italy sought to convert Ethiopia into a protectorate, a move initiated by the disputed Treaty of Wuchale (1889), which had different wording in Italian and Amharic versions.
• The Conflict: On March 1, 1896, near the town of Adwa, around 100,000 Ethiopian soldiers, including diverse regional forces united under Menelik II, overwhelmed roughly 17,000 Italian troops.
• Role of Leadership: Emperor Menelik II and Empress Titu were pivotal, with Titu leading forces and organizing support.
• Global Impact: The victory was shocking to European powers, breaking the myth of white superiority and making Ethiopia a beacon for Pan-Africanism.
• Modern Significance: Adwa is celebrated annually on March 2 in Ethiopia as a national holiday. It remains a symbol of resistance and African freedom, though modern interpretations sometimes cause political division regarding the role of historical figures. 

The victory forced Italy to sign the Treaty of Addis Ababa, formally recognizing Ethiopia's independence.
