(NewsNation) — A disabled woman on her way to a medical appointment who was dragged out of her car by federal immigration officers says she feels “lucky to be alive.”

Aliya Rahman, a U.S. citizen, was on her way to a doctor’s appointment in Minneapolis when she encountered federal agents at an intersection. Video of her arrest went viral online, and it appears to show a masked agent smashing Rahman’s passenger side window and others cutting her seatbelt. It also shows them dragging her out of her car through the driver’s side door and guards carrying her by her arms and legs.

Aliya Rahman, a Minneapolis resident who was detained by immigration agents in January, described her experience to lawmakers at a congressional forum Tuesday, saying she was dragged from her car and denied medical care despite having a disability. Rahman said that after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents broke her car window, shattering glass over her body, they used a knife to cut her seatbelt off and forcibly removed her from her car. She said she was taken to a detention facility, where she was denied the use of her cane. Despite asking for medical treatment and access to a lawyer, she was held in an interrogation room until she blacked out. Rahman spoke at a public forum held Tuesday by Congressional Democrats to examine the Department of Homeland Security’s use of what they say is excessive force. Federal immigration agents have been involved in more than a dozen shootings, some fatal, since President Donald Trump began his second term, sparking public outcry over use of force by officers deployed as part of his immigration crackdown. Families of victims and residents of Minneapolis, where two fatal shootings occurred last month, have demanded more transparency and accountability from the government, which has tried to shut local and state law enforcement out of investigations into the deaths. The issue became a driving factor behind the partial government shutdown this week. Democrats refused to agree to a government funding deal for a handful of agencies, including the DHS, without reforms to ICE and CBP, including requiring agents to wear body cameras, refrain from obscuring their faces and obtain judicial warrants for arrests. Lawmakers approved a short-term measure Tuesday that funds DHS only through Feb. 13, while debate continues over these proposals.
