Yes,

Africans are being sold into modern slavery, human trafficking, and forced labor in Libya. This practice has been ongoing since the collapse of the Gaddafi regime in 2011, which led to a power vacuum and a breakdown of law and order exploited by militias and criminal networks. 

Slave selling of Africans by Arabs is openly happening in Libya in 2025. This is Naima Jamal from Ethiopia who is now being sold as a slave in Libya, this also applies to those behind her.

Today Libya is a thriving slave market where Africans are being sold for as low as $300.

Key Details

• Vulnerable Population: The victims are primarily migrants from sub-Saharan African nations (including Nigeria, Niger, Sudan, Chad, Ghana, Cameroon, Eritrea, and Somalia) who are attempting to reach Europe via Libya to escape poverty, violence, and climate crises in their home countries.
• Methods of Sale: Migrants are often intercepted by smugglers or militias and held in overcrowded, unofficial detention centers. They are then sold in "slave markets" (often in town squares, garages, or private residences in cities like Sabha and Tripoli) to local buyers for as little as $200–$500.
• Forms of Exploitation: Once sold, migrants are subjected to severe abuse, including:
  • Forced labor: Working on farms, in construction, or in other informal sectors without pay.
  • Sexual slavery: Women and girls are disproportionately targeted for sexual exploitation and forced prostitution.
  • Ransom and Extortion: Captors force migrants to call their families and have them send money (often thousands of dollars) for their release, frequently beating or torturing them during the calls so the families can hear the abuse.
• Conditions: Victims report horrific conditions, including torture, malnutrition, lack of sanitation, and death.
• International Awareness: Reports from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in April 2017 and an investigative report by CNN in November 2017 with undercover footage brought global attention and outrage to the issue.
• Ongoing Crisis: Despite international condemnation and some investigations by Libyan authorities, the practice continues due to the ongoing political instability and lack of effective rule of law across much of Libya. The EU's policies to externalize border control have inadvertently worsened the situation by trapping more migrants in Libya, where they become vulnerable to these networks. 

The situation in Libya represents a severe humanitarian crisis and a stark example of modern-day slavery, with an estimated 700,000 migrants trapped in the country as of 2023.
