Zohran Mamdani will be sworn in as mayor on a Quran, a first in New York City history

NEW YORK (AP) — Incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani will take his midnight oath of office on a centuries-old Quran, marking the first time a mayor of New York City uses Islam’s holy text to be sworn in and underscoring a series of historic firsts for the city.

When the 34-year-old Democrat becomes mayor in a long-closed subway stationbeneath City Hall, he’ll be the first Muslim, first South Asian and first African-born person to hold that position.

These milestones — as well as the historical Quran he will use for the ceremony — reflect the longstanding and vibrant Muslim residents of the nation’s most populous city, according to a scholar who helped Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, select one of the books.

Most of Mamdani’s predecessors were sworn in on a Bible, although the oath to uphold the federal, state and city constitutions does not require the use of any religious text.

And while he has focused heavily on the issue of affordability during his campaign, Mamdani was outspoken about his Muslim faith. He frequently appeared at mosques across the five boroughs as he built a base of support that included many first-time South Asian and Muslim voters.

Democratic socialism is a

political ideology that advocates for a democratically run and socially owned economy, as opposed to a system based on private profit. It seeks to combine left-wing economics with political democracy, fundamentally rejecting capitalism as incompatible with values of freedom and equality, and is distinct from both authoritarian communism and social democracy. 

Core Principles and Goals

• Democratic Control: A central tenet is the extension of democracy to all aspects of society, including the economy and the workplace, often through mechanisms like worker cooperatives and self-management.
• Social Ownership: Democratic socialists support public or collective ownership of the means of production (e.g., major industries, utilities, transportation systems) to meet public needs, not for private profit.
• Abolition of Capitalism: The ultimate goal is a systemic transformation of the economy, moving beyond the inherent inequalities of capitalism, rather than merely regulating it.
• Social Welfare: Adherents advocate for extensive, publicly financed social programs such as universal healthcare, free education, and a robust social safety net as both a means to alleviate the harms of capitalism and a transition to a more equitable system.
• Paths to Socialism: Most democratic socialists seek a gradual transition through established political processes and incremental reforms (known as the "democratic road" to socialism), as opposed to a violent revolution. 

Distinction from Related Terms

Democratic socialism is frequently confused with other ideologies, particularly in the United States: 

• Social Democracy: While historically linked, modern social democracy does not seek to abolish capitalism. Instead, it aims to "humanize" it through state regulation, a strong welfare state, and a mixed economy where private ownership still predominates (e.g., the Nordic model countries like Sweden and Denmark).
• Communism/Marxism-Leninism: Democratic socialism explicitly rejects the authoritarian, one-party states and command economies associated with 20th-century regimes like the Soviet Union. It is committed to democracy as both a means and an end. 

In the United States

In the U.S., the term gained prominence during Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaigns, though the policies he advocated (such as Medicare for All and free college tuition) are often defined by political scientists as social democratic reforms rather than a complete replacement of capitalism. The primary organization promoting the ideology is the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which has seen significant membership growth in recent years.
