His descendants include the Salawi family, Al-Amar.
He gave his name to the Tower of Tears, which was called the Sidi Benacher Tower. He also gave his name to a primary school in the Butana neighborhood.
His shrine is celebrated on the seventh day of the anniversary of the Prophet’s birthday by giving Abdullah bin Hassoun pole candles.
His life
Ahmed bin Asher was born in Bashmaniyah, from Andalusia, where he grew up, memorized the Qur’an, and read the foundational science. Then he moved from there to Al-Jazira Al-Khadra, and resided there for a period of time, busy with teaching the Book of God Almighty. He met there the great scholars and eminences, including Sheikh Abu Sarhan Masoud the Idiot. Then he left for Hajj and visits, then returned to Morocco, entered the city of Fez, and resided there for a period, then he traveled to Muknassa Al-Zaytoun, and settled there for a period.. And in a different narration in some details, he entered Morocco with his family in the early eighth century AH during the reign of King Abu Annan. Fares Al-Marini, he traveled to Fez first, then went to Hijaz to perform the Hajj rituals, and after his return from Mecca, he settled in Muknasa Al-Zeitoun, then he left and settled in the city of Salé permanently in the year 1350 AD.
When Ahmed Ibn Ashir moved to the metropolis of Salé, he settled in Rabat al-Fath in the zawiya of the scholarly Sheikh Abu Abdullah al-Yabouri. He was a man known for his destiny because he contributed to the revival of knowledge in Rabat, after a period of stagnation that followed the weakness of the Almohads after the Battle of Uqab until the assumption of power by the Banu Marin, and he resided in Sidi Bin Asher with his Sheikh Al-Yabouri in goodness and approval. The Sheikh used to call him “the happiest and righteous young man.” He ordered him to be kind to him and look into his interests. He made him live alone in a shawl’s corner and encouraged him to recite the Qur’an to the children, because he chose to eat only what he earned, just as he earned by copying books and selling them. Especially “Umdat al-Ahkam,” and he admired her and influenced her memorization and understanding. Bin Ashir’s preoccupation with earning money from manual labor was a search for independence, which later prompted Sultan Abu Anan al-Marini to search for him and desire to visit him in a famous story.
After the death of Sheikh Al-Yabouri, Ahmed bin Asher moved to Adwa Salé, where he stayed in the corner of Sheikh Abu Zakaria, which is located near the Great Mosque, and in the house of its predecessor, Sheikh Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Issa, a student of the aforementioned Sheikh Abu Zakaria.
Abdullah Al-Talidi says in his book: “Al-Mutrib fi Famous Saints of the Maghreb” on the authority of Sidi Ahmed bin Ashir Al-Andalusi, a resident of Salé and its refuge, who was unrivaled in asceticism and piety. He was one of the greatest working scholars, cut off from the world and its people, with great aversion to princes and statesmen, and he hardly encountered any problems. One of them went to Sultan Abu Annan once, wanting to visit him. He stood at his door for a long time, but he did not give him permission. He left and returned, then returned to it several times, but did not reach him.
Among the students of Ibn Asher is Sidi Ali bin Ayoub Al-Rabati, who used to say: “Whoever thinks the truth is in something other than the Qur’an has gone astray, and whoever seeks to reach it on a path other than the Sunnah will never arrive. Also among his students is Muhammad Al-Halafawi Al-Ishbili, who settled in Fez and took Sufism from Abu Yaqoub Al-Zayat. Among them is Ibn Abi Madin al-Uthmani, who used to say: “Tame yourself with legal etiquette and it will lead you to the Holy Presence,” and Ibn Abbad, the author of the major and minor treatises. Perhaps the authors of these biographies were influenced, as their successors were, by the Andalusian works, some of which Ibn Bashkwal referred to in his book, such as the book “The Dignities of the Righteous.” by Abd al-Rahman Ibn Futais in thirty volumes, and the book “The Container of Monotheism, Sufism, and Fatwas,” by al-Maskari, the author of “The Cloud among the Companions Who Entered Morocco,” the book “Disclosure of Those Who Known in Andalusia as Salah” by Abu al-Barakat al-Balfiqi, and Anwar al-Afkar fi Those Who Entered the Island of Andalusia from the Ascetics and the Righteous by Ibn al-Saqr. He died in 559 AH.
Imam Bin Ashir died in Rajab of the year four, according to what is in “Al-Silsil Al-Athb” by Al-Hadrami, or five, according to “Anas Al-Faqir” by Ibn Qunfuth, at the age of seven hundred and sixty, and he was buried inside Salé, near the shore of the surrounding sea, not far from the Great Mosque, and his grave is famous. A shrine to this day, and he was buried near that place where a group of his companions who died before him were buried, and visits to him continue to this day, especially those with illnesses and disabilities, and that was the case of Sheikh Bin Asher during his life.
