To my friends, relatives and colleagues who do not normally follow news out of #Israel or #Palestine: it is important for you

to know that the violence you're seeing on television did not begin yesterday or happen out of the blue, as most media outlets would lead you to believe.

Over the past year, the far-right and openly racist Israeli government has been wantonly killing Palestinian civilians (including literally hundreds of children), kidnapping many more Palestinians and holding them without trial, desecrating one of Islam's most sacred holy sites (as well as ancient Christian sites), and forcing countless Palestinian families out of their homes simply because they are Palestinian. The Israeli government has done this and even worse for years and decades.

But the media doesn't provide wall to wall coverage of those injustices. Only when some Palestinians lash out at Israel do American media outlets suddenly wake up. Reporters launch breaking news coverage that highlights Israeli victims of violence while ignoring Palestinian victims of not only violence, but systemic occupation and oppression.

Point being: if you are not regularly looking for news about Israel and Palestine, this media habit could give you the false impression that the Palestinian side is the aggressor and that the Palestinian side is uniquely violent. Neither is true.

The truth is that the Israeli occupation of Palestine is the real reason these horrific cycles of violence keep occurring, taking lives of civilians on both sides. And the other truth is that our nation's leaders (both Republicans and Democrats) keep providing the Israeli government with the financial, political and diplomatic support to carry on the occupation, leading to more violence.

To end the violence, the occupation must end. To end the occupation, the United States must radically change its foreign policy. Like the problem of apartheid in South Africa, the arrival of freedom and justice is the only permanent solution. It is the only way to permanently end the cycle violence so that Jews, Christians, Muslims and others can once again peacefully co-exist in a blessed land that so many of us hold dear.
