Despite recent insecurity in the Haut Plateau, our continuing efforts to bring the light are gathering energy and support!

 

We have recently completed our initial medical needs-assessment trip with the organization Global Outreach Doctors (GoDocs).  Improving health outcomes in our rural areas has long been a major dream. 

 

Now, with GoDocs' support, we can see a path forward to making real strides towards this goal.  Based on their assessment, the highest priority areas will be mental health and women's health.

We were fortunate to visit many rural hospitals and clinics, and meet with the patients, doctors, and staff.

 

Global Outreach doctors (GoDocs)

GoDocs assessed, as we knew, that our rural health facilities are overwhelmed.  It was revelatory to the doctors to see the degree of trauma that our population is suffering on a daily basis.  And powerful for us, to see their reactions.

 

In their three days of providing clinical treatment, the team experienced many of these challenges first-hand.

We were very touched to meet many individuals and hear their stories.  One young boy in particular had been suffering from cerebral palsy, with no diagnosis.  When the team broke the news to him and his family, they were crushed.  But then he met Neema.  Seeing a disabled woman with so much power and success, he was much encouraged.  His family invited Neema to adopt him as her son.

 

GoDocs Nurse Kimberly Spray says, "The doctors and nurses in South Kivu are so open and passionate about helping the people. They just have not yet had access to the training to be able to get there."

Our plans for implementing new strategies for women's health and mental health are in progress, with many new partners coming together to support this movement.  Education will surely be a key component.

 

Another idea we love is the model of solidarity groups.  In a region where there is less than 1 trained psychiatrist per million people, training many more personnel is not going to be a quick solution.  But women can work together to heal themselves and one another.   Well-respected institutions like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and the IRC have extensively researched how solidarity groups - "A Community-Based
Economic and Psychosocial Support Intervention" - can greatly improve survivors' mental health.

 

This model, in which women essentially come together to share their stories and explore solutions collectively, is so in line with everything we do at Hero Women Rising.  We look forward to the possibilities that working in this model will open up to expand our paradigm-shifting movement.

 

We are so thankful to have the support of GoDocs in developing new strategies to deal with the challenges to health care we face in rural eastern DRC.
