IMAN Meets 97 Years Of Palestinian Struggle...

As Israel's President travelled to DC yesterday to address a Joint Session of Congress, my soon to be 97yr old (InshAllah) grandfather came back to 63rd Street to join me in a facilitated conversation at @imancentral at our monthly senior luncheon.

Not surprisingly nothing that my grandfather talked about or his existence, his story or millions like him was ever even referenced by the President of Israel. Not the fact that Israel's 75yr old formation came with the painful displacement, forced exile and lethal violence imposed upon 700,000 Palestinians. Nothing of course about the fact that many of these same villagers like my grandfather actually tried to initially support and show hospitality to displaced Polish Jewish refugees fleeing from the horrors of the Holocaust; nothing about the fact that millions of these Palestinians still live scattered in refugee camps across the region and nothing about the ongoing state supported displacement of Palestinian families from their ancestral lands and extreme state protected settler violence inflicting horror and inciting pogroms. We did of course hear about "Palestinian terror" and about the expectation that we US taxpayers will blindly provide 4 billion dollars in military and other aid to unquestionably support Israel's illegal military occupation and oppression of the Palestinians.

My prayer and hope as Muslims observing the beginning of a new year yesterday and Jewish communities observed beginning of the Month of Av that all of us can continue to grow in our spiritual traditions to call ourselves out and up into the best of what each of our traditions and communities offer to humanity. Blindly turning away from injustice here and across the globe is not the way to bring in that moment on our calendars.
