I never met those three men in my life who sacrificed themselves to protect the children at the Islamic Center of San Diego from two active shooters. But I have always believed: if someone dies a hero, then they must have lived an honorable and beautiful life. And there is nothing more heroic than protecting vulnerable children and sacrificing your own life to save them.

So I started learning about them through the testimonies and stories shared by the people who knew them personally — and what three truly beautiful souls they were.

Brother Amin Abdullah — the smiling face that welcomed everyone into the masjid and school. A guard who didn’t just secure doors, but lifted spirits and reminded people to smile, serve, and care for one another. When I later read the stories from those who knew him, it all made perfect sense. He died exactly how he lived: protecting others with kindness, courage, and selflessness.

Brother Mansoor “Abu Izz” Kazziha — the caretaker of generations. A man who spent decades serving youth, mentoring families, supporting the masjid, and comforting anyone who needed someone to listen. Even in his final moments, he stood shielding students from evil.

Brother Nader Awad — the neighbor of the masjid. When he heard the gunshots, he ran toward the danger knowing children, teachers, and his own wife were inside. He rushed into the gunfire to stop the attackers and delay them from reaching the classrooms. His courage helped save countless lives.

And while chaos unfolded, Mrs. Khairaat stood strong inside the kindergarten classroom, calming terrified children while facing unimaginable fear herself.

These are not just stories of tragedy.

These are stories of sacrifice, faith, service, courage, and love for the community.

May God accept these men as martyrs, elevate their ranks, heal the wounded, protect our children, and grant strength and patience to their families. Their legacy will live on in every child they protected.

للَّهُمَّ يا ربّ الشهداء والصديقين، أسألك أن تتقبل من جادوا بأرواحهم وأعزّ ما يملكون في سبيلك وكلمة الحق. اللَّهُمَّ اغفر لهم وارحمهم، وأكرم نزلهم، واجعلهم في الفردوس الأعلى من الجنة يرزقون. اللَّهُمَّ ثقّل بالحسنات موازينهم، وثبّتهم على الصراط يوم تزل الأقدام. اللَّهُمَّ اجعلهم ممّن قلت فيهم: (وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَمْوَاتًا ۚ بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ). اللَّهُمَّ اربط على قلوب أمهاتهم وآبائهم وأهليهم جميعاً، وأفرغ عليهم صبراً جميلاً لا إله إلا أنت سبحانك".

O Allah, O Lord of the martyrs and the truthful ones, I ask You to accept from those who gave their souls and the most precious thing they possess in Your cause and for the word of truth.

O Allah, forgive them and have mercy upon them, honor their resting place, and place them in the highest Firdaws of Paradise, where they are provided for.

O Allah, make their scales heavy with good deeds, and keep them firm on the Sirat on the day when feet slip.

O Allah, make them among those of whom You said: “And do not think of those who were killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, being provided for.”

O Allah, strengthen the hearts of their mothers, fathers, and all their families, and pour upon them beautiful patience. There is no god but You, Glory be to You.
