WOODBRIDGE, Va. — On Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024, Matriarch Mattie Hockaday Brown of Woodbridge, Virginia, and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, was welcomed into eternal life by her heavenly Father. She was born to the late Junnie and Connie Hawkins on Jan. 2, 1931, in Halifax.

Mattie received her formal education in the Halifax County Public School System, where she excelled in reading and developed a passion for playing basketball.

During her early life, Mattie accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined Walnut Grove Baptist Church. She later became a member of Carters Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, served on the Usher Board for more than 60 years, and remained a faithful, dedicated member until she relocated to Virginia.

On April 4, 1948, Mattie was united in marriage to William Glenwood Hockaday, who preceded her in death. God blessed this union with five children. The oldest son, Glenn, predeceased her. (Glenwood Hockaday (Glen Hockaday)

Mattie was a pillar of the community and accepted her calling as a missionary. She donated blood for 35 years, volunteered with Hospice for 25 years, was a member of the Red Cross 500 Gallon Club, received numerous accolades for community service, and was a recipient of the Governor’s Award in 1996.

In 1973, Mattie married the late Jasper L. Brown. From this marriage, she was abundantly blessed with six stepchildren, three of whom are deceased: Alphonso, Jasper and Sherry.

Those remaining to walk in the footsteps of Mattie’s legacy are her four children, Patricia Blount (Terry) of Dumfries, Virginia, Shelia Hockaday and Earl Hockaday (Polly), all of Roanoke Rapids, and Vickie Armstrong (Vernice) of Woodbridge; also left with treasured memories of her life are three stepchildren, Evelyn, Ernie and Wayne; two loving sisters, Rachel Wills and Ophelia Brown; two sisters-in-law, Lenora and Mae Hawkins; her daughter-of-the-heart, Shirley Wills; her son-of-the-heart, David Towe; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at Robinson Funeral Home, 215 US Highway 158 in Littleton, which is handling the arrangements.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at Carters Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 490 Everetts School Road in Roanoke Rapids. The Rev. Louis E. Yarborough, pastor, will deliver the eulogy, and burial will follow in the Hawkins Family Cemetery, Walnut Grove Road in Roanoke Rapids.
