US magazine fires columnist over racist web post

An American fortnightly magazine has given its prominent columnist John Derbyshire his cards over a web posting in which he wrote black people are hostile to whites, and that white people should stay out of black neighborhoods and away from black crowds.

The New York City-based National Review on Saturday decried Derbyshire's posting -- which ran on the webzine Taki's Magazine and is unrelated to the National Review, saying the posting is "nasty and indefensible."

"We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer," editor Rich Lowry said in a posting on the magazine's website.

"Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we'd never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways," Lowry said, adding that the act has amounted to a "letter of resignation" by the columnist, Reuters reported.

Derbyshire has a history of controversy when it comes to race, and he has even proclaimed himself a racist in a 2003 interview.

The report comes as level of racism and violence directed against black people in the United States has increased significantly.

Early on Friday, a gunman shot five people, killing three of them, in a black neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a shooting spree that left residents on edge and sparked an intensive manhunt.

Three men and one woman were shot within a mile of each other in north Tulsa, while the body of a fifth victim was discovered outside a nearby funeral home in the predominantly black part of the city.

Meanwhile, African-American filmmaker Tyler Perry recently said he was racially profiled by two white officers who pulled his car during a traffic stop in Atlanta.

Furthermore, 17-year-old black teenager Trayvon Martin was shot dead by self-described neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, on February 26.

Martin was unarmed, and was carrying a bag of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea, when he was fatally shot.
