Attention Brothers, Sisters, Colleagues, Comrades and friends:

Imam Jamil Al Amin

IMAM JAMIL AL-AMIN (formerly known as H. Rap Brown)

IJAN, the Imam Jamil Action Network, is announcing its plans for its Campaign for the year 2019 to exonerate Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly H. Rap Brown. In honor of Imam Jamil Al-Amin becoming 75 years old on his last birthday October 4, 2018, and in recognition of his having been a conscious student and community activist since he was fifteen years old and honoring the fact that he refers to himself as a Prisoner at War, the Campaign’s theme has been named: FROM H.RAP BROWN to IMAM JAMIL AL-AMIN, 75 YEARS of LIFE, 60 YEARS of CONSCIOUS STRUGGLE: A PRISONER AT WAR.

We would like to thank those who have worked with us in the past as well as those joining with us to collectively fight for the exoneration of Imam Jamil Al-Amin. This advisory is to make you aware of the entire scope of activities IJAN is planning. We will communicate with you regarding specific aspects of the campaign as they approach. IJAN will be involved in monthly events most of this year, 2019.

MARCH: Under the Campaign’s theme, IJAN hosted, with RashidunDC and The Aafia Foundation, a forum and Facebook Live event on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the American Museum of Islamic Heritage in Washington DC. That day was the 19th anniversary of the shooting incident in Atlanta during which Imam Jamil Al-Amin was falsely accused and hastily convicted of murdering a sheriff’s deputy, and sentenced to life with no possibility of parole plus 35 years.

APRIL: In April, IJAN will be representing Imam Jamil Al-Amin at the 2nd Annual Black American Muslim Conference in Atlanta the weekend of April 19-21. On April 27th IJAN and The Malcolm X Grassroots Organization will host a second community forum, a pre-cursor to the October Relearning H. Rap Brown national conference, also to be held in Atlanta. This will be a FBLIVE event.

MAY: On Friday, May 3, 2019, Judges of The Eleventh Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals will hear Oral Arguments in Atlanta about Jamil Al-Amin’s appeal of his 2000 conviction. The appeal, among other issues, maintains that the State of Georgia violated Jamil Al-Amin’s Constitutional Rights, by, for example, placing a gag order on him prohibiting him from speaking about his case, not allowing him to testify in his own defense and then holding that against him, and withholding evidence favorable to him: a signed confession to the shooting by another person.

On Saturday May 18th, at the 30th MALCOLM X FESTIVAL (BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION), hosted by the Atlanta Malcolm X Grassroots Organization, IJAN Atlanta members will distribute information on Imam Jamil Al-Amin’s status and legal case. This action may be duplicated in multiple locations where commemorative programs are held to honor El Hajj Malik Shabazz/ Malcolm X. This will also be a FBLIVE Event.

JUNE: In June, Muslims will end their monthlong RAMADAN fast. IJAN will request that Imams will reference Imam Jamil Al-Amin and his work and life as a muslim.in their end of Ramadan sermons.

Also, in JUNE, IJAN plans to repeat outreach and literature distribution action during JUNETEENTH observances.

JULY: During the last weekend, July 26-28 in Atlanta, IJAN plans to host severalactivities at The Riyadah, the Annual National Gathering of Al-Ummah Masjids and Communities aligned with the leadership of Imam Jamil Al-Amin.

AUGUST: BLACKAUGUST has developed as a tradition during which there are Major Observances of many historical acts of African resistance to U.S. oppression, and particularly on cases of New Afrikan Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War, honoring and commemorating a California Prison rebellion.

IJAN will hold its major Media initiative of the yearlong campaign that month, including RADIO FREE JAMIL AL-AMIN and ALL PPOWs, an activity in which all of you will be asked to participate, either by holding a media event you may design, or in coordination with IJAN related to this year’s campaign theme: FROM H. RAP BROWN to IMAM JAMIL AL- AMIN, 75 YEARS OF LIFE, 60 YEARS OF CONSCIOUS STRUGGLE: A PRISONER AT WAR.

SEPTEMBER: In SEPTEMBER, Savanah, GA will host its annual Fish Fry and Community Discussion focusing on the exoneration and Freedom of Imam Jamil Al-Amin, mass incarceration and other local issues. This will be a FACEBOOKLIVE event.

OCTOBER: A national conference, RE-LEARNING H. RAP BROWN, held in Atlanta on the weekend of October 4th, will be cohosted by scholars Dr. Akinyele Umoja and author Arun Kundnani. Conference organizers hope to attract activists, academics, Muslims and Rap Artists. Kundnani is the initiator of the petition to END THE GAG ORDER which can be read and signed by visiting the website: KUNDNANI.ORG. IJAN will be conducting a workshop for people wanting to become involved in the campaign to exonerate Imam Jamil Al-Amin, the former H. Rap Brown. Looking forward to working together this year and during the years to come.

Respectfully,

Bilal Sunni-Ali, National Media Coordinator
