A Tribute To
A Revolutionary Freedom Fighter Extraordinaire
AbdudDharr Abdullah
El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz/MalcolmX once observed: “No matter how much respect, no matter how much recognition whites show towards me…as long as that same respect and recognition isn’t shown towards every one of our people in this country – it doesn’t exist for me.” This same attitude was embraced and practiced by Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin/H. Rap Brown. His entire adult life was dedicated to working for the upliftment of society’s poor and oppressed. He chose a different path than those referred by W.E. DuBois as the ‘talented tenth’. Well compensated for serving as buffers between the status-quo and the denied, deprived, downtrodden, excluded, marginalized, poor and oppressed throngs of the masses who remain constricted in the bowels of inner-city and blight ridden rural communities all throughout the American landscape; they have given-up on the idea of striving for the dignity and honor of becoming liberated men and women. They have, instead, opted to acquiesce and gleefully accept the accommodations and concessions the oppressor-class allows them to enjoy as they receive the left-over crumbs begrudgingly allotted to them. Bribed into capitulation, they seem to be content with having been granted a cut of ‘the American pie’.
In spite of all the business owners, corporate heads, educators, entertainers, public officials, sports figures, and upper management personnel in major corporations, who are all black and living relatively very comfortable lives; the overwhelming majority of American Born Afrikan descended people living in this country remain at the bottom rung of the economic/financial ladder suffering the exact same conditions that have plagued us throughout our sojourn in this “land of the free and home of the brave of liberty and justice for all”.
Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin was the Revolutionary Freedom Fighter extraordinaire. Like very few of the revolutionary movement of the late 60’s and early 70’s, he realized the absolute necessity of the need for those involved in the struggle to first and foremost win the battle of self-transformation before being able to successfully transform the society in which we all live. He once said in an interview with Gil Noble: “You can’t beat anybody if you can’t beat yourself.” As a prelude to altering the social environment with all of its evils, imperfections and problems that lay at the root of the injustice, oppression and tyranny under which the people suffer; he stressed that those who would be the initiators of change must go through a process of self-improvement, self-purification and self-rebuilding. It was clear to him that those who look to implement major adjustments in society must, first of all, work on their inner-selves so that it reflects the features, qualities and virtues they long to see prevail in the world around them.
This came to be the main focus in his approach to social transformation. He dared to make it his main argument and key point of emphasis regardless of how his peers and the masses reacted, and/or responded, to his call: the need for the revolutionary practitioner to put an end to self-injustice, self-oppression and self-tyranny by putting GOD first and foremost in their agenda, intentions and endeavors. Thus, by putting an end to the habits and lifestyles indicative of sinful inertia, the Creator may then use them to set things right, enabling them to win.
He summed it all up with the following from ‘Revolution By The Book’: “Allah said in the Qur’an that verily, He will not change the condition of a people until they change that which is within themselves. He will not change the environment. He will not change the world in which you live until you change that which is within yourself.”
“The mission of a believer in Islam is totally different from coexisting or being a part of the system. The prevailing morals are wrong. Their ethics are wrong. Western philosophy… has reduced man to food, clothing, shelter, and the sex drive, which means he doesn’t have a spirit. Successful struggle requires a Divine program. Allah has provided that program.”
May all who aspire to make this world the place it was created to be come to the realization that “...revolution begins from within.” For only then will there ever be any chance of bringing the struggle for human rights for all children, women and men to a satisfactory end.
As a well-known line originated by the ‘Last Poets’ in one of the selections on the album ‘Delights of the Garden’ and often quoted by Imam Jamil informs us…”Blessed are those who struggle. Oppression is worse than the grave. Better to die for a noble cause. Then to live and die a slave.”
