In 1974, legendary organizer, activist, and the mother of the Civil Rights Movement Ella Baker addressed the Puerto Rico solidarity rally. In her speech, Ella Baker noted her 40 to 50 years in the struggle, starting when a young white boy called her a n*gger and she hit him. But she realized hitting one person back was not enough, seeing that the power of racism, oppression, and imperialism stretch far beyond the individual and require more than an individual response. One person cannot destroy an army. It takes an army. She argues that everyone must fight for freedom, “every day of the year, every year until [we] win it.”

Baker specifically identifies that no one can be free in a nation where there is capitalism and imperialism. Many of our followers may take issue with this point about capitalism. If you are one of them, why do you defend capitalism? Do you believe our ancestors practiced the look-out-for-yourself system of capitalism? Do you believe that Ella Baker, Malcolm X, Kwame Ture, Angela Davis, the Black Panther Party, and countless other liberatory figures of the past were duped into being anti-capitalist? Do you think they spent less time on their analysis than you? How much time have you spent learning about capitalism and the critiques our people have made against it? Remember, we’ve all been colonized and fed thoughts that are supportive of the system of white supremacy. If you hold something to be true that is accepted in the mainstream without having grappled with it, how do you know it is not one of those thoughts? We should be cautious of snap-judgments regarding matters. Especially given the lengths that the U.S. has gone to in order to create anti-Socialist and anti-communist sentiments in this nation. We are not stating you have to be socialist, communist, or anti-capitalist. But you should know that the U.S. lies all the time and wants to oppress and exploit you and as much of the world as possible to enrich the likes of Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, the Rothschilds, the Waltons, and the billionaire class. The more humans they can move into the category of losers, the larger their winnings become. This is why even in “the wealthiest nation of the world” there are many times more empty homes than homeless people. If you take issue with Ella Baker or Kwame Ture or any other criticizing capitalism, you should seriously investigate why they said what they said. They did more than enough for our people for you to give them the respect of hearing them out on what they argue is a central issue in gaining our freedom.
