A Tale of Two Insurrections

“No one had ever seen anything like it. Wilmington’s whites had mounted a rare armed overthrow of a legally elected government. They had murdered…with impunity. They had robbed black citizens of their right to vote . . .They had forcibly removed elected officials from office…They had turned a black-majority city into a white citadel.” – David Zucchino, Wilmington’s Lie: The Murderous Coup of 1898 and the Rise of White Supremacy

On Jan. 6, I tuned in to watch the certification of the 2020 electoral college vote. It was my first time witnessing this process unfold. As a D.C. native, I’m admittedly nerdy when it comes to our national government. In D.C., politicians, pundits, and journalists are equivalent to celebrities.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner Debuts Prison Abolition Poem 'Comfort Food' For Black History Month [Exclusive] - Shadow and Act

Shadow and Act has the exclusive premiere from The Resident star Malcolm-Jamal Warner featuring his spoken word poem, "Comfort Food." The poem tackles America's problems with its penal system and advocates for prison abolition. The poem and video were composed, recorded and shot by Warner and edited by Nathan Anderson.

"As society, we have been conditioned to be creatures of comfort," Warner said in a statement "We artificially sweeten inconvenient truths to make us feel good. We hold onto lies to make us feel right. Imagine a society where we all feast on love and nurture each other in a way that uplifts every individual's inner light."

Republican state lawmakers want to punish schools that teach the 1619 Project

1619

This story was published in partnership with The 19th, a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom reporting on gender, politics and policy.

Lawmakers in several statehouses this year want to stop lesson plans that focus on the centrality of slavery to American history as presented in The New York Times’ 1619 Project, previewing new battles in states over control of civics education.

Republican lawmakers in ArkansasIowaMississippiMissouri and South Dakota filed bills last month that, if enacted, would cut funding to K-12 schools and colleges that provide lessons derived from the award-winning project. The South Dakota bill has since been withdrawn.

Some historians say the bills are part of a larger effort by Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, to glorify a more white and patriarchal view of American history that downplays the ugly legacy of slavery and the contributions of Black people, Native Americans, women and others to the nation’s founding.
