Quotes of El-Hajj Malik El- Shabazz/Malcolm X that generally appear on FB and other social media are too often repetitive, one-dimensional, and not fully reflective of the profound thinking of that great leader. During the last transformational year to year and a half of his life, Shabazz continued to rightly and righteously denounce and expose what he called " the hypocrisy of democracy", as demonstrated by the Democrats and Republicans alike. Further, he spoke against politicians who were corrupt and non-responsive to the needs of the Black community. He equally denounced Black non-productive cyclical voting patterns, resulting from lack of political knowledge and self-determination. All of these problems still exist today, and the enemies of our progress continue to exploit them. However rather than encourage non-voting, Shabazz/X advocated for Black political education, followed by grassroots organization, and intelligent, strategic empowerment, centered on an independent vote. He expressed this publicly during speeches and interviews often but not exclusively delivered at forums in NYC. Practically he worked with Muslim and non-Muslim members of the Organization of Afro-American Unity ( which he and others founded), to devise a strategic plan towards that end. His leadership of the OAAU was aborted by assassin's bullets and government counter--strategem . The implementation of the plan was fragmented throughout the Movement. Insha'Allah ( Allah willing) going forward between now and election day I will continue to avoid online polemic, and instead share direct quotes- not interpretations nor interpolations - from our " Black shining prince", as a way of heightening our collective awareness, balancing our views, uplifting our consciousness, and informing our actions. We still have a ton of work to do as a people, towards fulfillment of necessary immediate and long term goals of freedom, justice, and equality.
