Chaplain Asma Inge-Hanif: "The Silent Global Epidemic: Domestic Violence Against Women"

Mildred Muhammad, the ex-wife of the Washington, D.C., sniper, was a victim of domestic violence that led to John Muhammad’s slaughter of innocent people.  She tells of injuries that can't be seen.  It is the abuse not caused by weapons, but the emotional, spiritual and psychological abuse that on the surface may seem harmless to the many who don't understand what it's like to be a victim.  
“What most people don’t know is that I was the intended target, he was killing innocent people to cover up my murder so he could come in and get custody of our children,” said Mildred Muhammad. As a result of being mentally tormented, Mildred Muhammad testified on behalf of a bill that expands the definition of domestic abuse to include harassment and malicious destruction of property.

"It's difficult for people without scars to get help.  I'm a victim and I don't have scars. You have to wait until you are physically abused or burned or mutilated or killed before someone will say that's a victim of domestic violence," Mildred Muhammad.

Data issued by the Bureau of Justice Statistics show that partner violence and domestic homicide remain a devastating problem in this country making it clear that our nation is not yet doing nearly enough to keep women and children safe.

As an educated woman and businessperson, she couldn't believe she found herself in a shelter, afraid for her life and having nowhere else to go..
