The greatest threat we face is to fall into the mental trap that individuals can’t make a difference for Gaza’s

children. 30 years ago we arranged free reconstructive surgery for then teenage Faris Faris from the Beach Refugee Camp In Gaza after he was shot in the face by an Israeli soldier. Faris is an American citizen now and was visiting his mother on October 7. He decided to stay and help his people, saying he would rather die and meet his children who were back in New Jersey up in heaven than abandon the children of Gaza. Over the past two months I’ve seen Faris provide water for sick children in our now-empty cancer department, and survive several massacres. He’s now down south buying winter jackets for hundreds of displaced children. The courage and humanity of Fares is one of countless examples of individuals making a difference, and that we can all do more for Gaza’s children. Love, truth, and courage will always defeat hate, lies, and fear.
