The Autocrat, The Democrat, and the Lazy Fairy
By: Umar Carter
As someone who has spent a lot of time studying leadership, I'm sometimes asked about the different types of leaders that exist. While there are many ways to classify leaders, I believe there are three main types: autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire.
Autocratic leaders are those who make decisions without input from their team members. They tend to be very assertive and authoritative, and they often have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish. While this type of leadership can be effective in certain situations, it can also lead to team members feeling disengaged and undervalued.
Democratic leaders, on the other hand, encourage team members to participate in the decision-making process. They are collaborative and supportive, and they value the opinions and ideas of everyone on the team. This type of leadership can help to foster a positive team culture and increase engagement and buy-in from team members. The drawback with this approach is that sometimes the team can be stymied by analysis paralysis.
Finally, there are laissez-faire leaders, who take a hands-off approach to leadership. They provide minimal guidance and direction, preferring to let team members work independently. While this type of leadership can be effective in certain situations, it can also lead to confusion and a lack of accountability.
I believe the best type of leadership will depend on the circumstance and the needs of the team. As a leader, it's important to be aware of your own strengths and areas that may need to be further developed, and to be willing to adapt your style as needed to achieve the best possible outcomes for your team and the larger organizational objective.

Leadership Approaches
By: Umar Carter
***This post was inspired by one of Frank Kim's classes that I took during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am inspired by his approach to leadership and I hope I captured some of his perspectives in his post. Apologies Frank if I butchered anything you taught me.***
There are different approaches to leadership; each with its own unique perspective on how to effectively lead and manage a team or an organization.
Some of the most common approaches to leadership include:
Trait approach: This approach takes the perspective that effective leaders possess specific innate qualities, such as intelligence, charisma, and confidence, which enable them to effectively carry out their remit.
Behavioral approach: This approach focuses on behaviors and actions of leaders, and suggests that certain leadership styles and behaviors are more effective in different situations.
Situational approach: This approach suggests that effective leadership requires a leader to adjust her style based on the situation. Leaders must be able to assess the situation and adapt their approach to fit the needs of their team and organization.
Contingency approach: This approach suggests that leadership effectiveness depends on the leader's ability to adapt to the specific circumstances of a given situation. Leaders must be able to adjust their approach based on the specific circumstances and needs of their team.
Transformational approach: This approach emphasizes the leader's ability to inspire and motivate their team to achieve their full potential in order to accomplish organizational objectives. Leaders who take a transformational approach are often seen as visionaries who inspire their team to work towards a common goal.
Servant leadership approach: This approach emphasizes the leader's responsibility to prioritize the needs of their team and work to support their growth and development. Leaders who take a servant leadership approach focus on creating a positive and supportive environment for their team.
Well rounded approach: Each of the above approaches has its own strengths and weaknesses. Effective leaders are often able to draw upon multiple approaches to lead their team successfully to a desired outcome. By understanding the different approaches to leadership and their respective advantages and disadvantages, leaders can develop a more well-rounded approach to leading their team toward a common mutually beneficial goal.
