ISB Atlanta

ISB 2013 Building Bridges Award a Success!

Greetings!

Thank you to everyone who made the 2013 ISB Building Bridges Awards Dinner a success!

Dinner guests joined some of Atlanta's most prominent leaders from the media, interfaith, education, and business communities at this year's event, which featured a networking reception, music by the String Ensemble of The Waldorf School of Atlanta, a dinner, and an awards ceremony.

This year's recipients of the ISB Building Bridges Awards were Dekalb County Public Library System and the Marist School. The ISB's Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Dr. Gerald L. Durley.  Mrs. Noor Abbady was named the ISB's Speaker of the Year. Congratulations to all award recipients!  The ISB honored individuals and organizations in the metro Atlanta area who have made significant contributions towards interfaith and multicultural understanding.

Author and Distinguished Visiting Scholar of New York University, Dr. Jack G. Shaheen, delivered an engaging keynote address about the impact of stereotyping. Guiding the audience to challenge stereotypes with hope, he said, "what comes from the mouth goes to the ear, what comes from the heart goes to the heart."

Brenda Wood, anchor of WXIA-TV, was the gracious emcee and remarked on Dr. Jack Shaheen's talk, "I don't know about you, but I feel infinitely smarter."

Executive Director of the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, Kenny Blank, was the Honorary Chair of the 2013 ISB Building Bridges Awards Dinner. Kenny Blank along with Imam Plemon El Amin made for a heartwarming welcome.

Rev. Dr. Durley's speech was powerful and inspired the audience to take action. He addressed the attendees, "When you put people in a box, you put yourself in a box. We have become a nation of boxes and we need bridges to go across these boxes." Durley encouraged the attendees to do work that not only the ISB is doing, but to take it to the next level.  Attendees walked out inspired to build their own bridges and make a change.

I am proud to announce two new exciting programs for 2014. In addition to the Islamic Speakers Bureau, there will be a multi-faith speakers panel. Secondly, we are establishing the 100 Georgia Most Influential Muslims. These two new projects are further examples of the direction that the ISB will be taking upwards and onwards.

We were honored to have Maria Saporta write about the ISB and our Dinner. To read her article, please click here.  To view the event's picture gallery, please click here.

If you missed the event, you can still support the ISB's efforts by making a secure online donation through our website or mailing a check payable to ISB Atlanta to ISB Atlanta, P.O. Box 2608, Peachtree City, GA 30269. Please remember that our efforts to promote interfaith and multicultural understanding are only possible through your support.

Together, we look forward to another year of success!

Best wishes,
