Because she does not wear a sign you may not know that someone is a victim of domestic violence.  And why would she share this info?  Studies have shown that attitudes toward victims of domestic violence and their abusers give evidence that most blame the victim.

Imagine how depressing it is for them to learn that, all too often, their pleas for help fall on deaf ears. This is what we hear from the women and children using our services – time and time again.

Speaking out against a violent partner is an extraordinarily brave thing to do. When women who experience domestic violence finally leave, they display true courage.

As a result of a donor who understood the need, Muslimat Al Nisaa was able to rescue a victim of domestic violence. Terrified but determined, I met her at the airport and we boarded the plane together.  Aware that airplane rides are not always the best form of travel for Muslims, I prayed that this would not be an experience which added insult to her injuries.

And so I want to state that the treatment provided to us by Pam, a Flight Attendant on Southwest Airlines, transformed turmoil into something treasured.  She was not only polite and kind but also extremely attentive.  To be fair she was this way to everyone on the plane.  But then again that is what anyone of us would want - to not be treated differently from anyone else simply because one is Muslim.  And although she and Susan and Tanya and Diedre had no idea how much their actions and attitudes meant to one whom had been treated so badly, I want to publicly thank them.
