CAIR Welcomes DOJ Civil Rights Review of Trayvon Martin Case
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/15/13) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today welcomed a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announcement that it is reviewing the civil rights issues associated with the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last year in Sanford, Fla.
CAIR said the DOJ should investigate whether George Zimmerman violated Martin's civil rights by apparently engaging in racial profiling prior to the deadly shooting. Zimmerman was found not guilty of state murder charges Saturday night by a Florida jury. That verdict resulted in protests nationwide.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
"We welcome the Justice Department's review of this troubling case and hope a swift determination will be made as to whether federal civil rights charges may be brought against George Zimmerman.
"We also repeat our call for members of the Senate to endorse the End Racial Profiling Act, which would eliminate profiling based on race, ethnicity, national origin, and religion by federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement."
Awad added that CAIR deals with the issue of racial, ethnic and religious profiling on a daily basis. He noted that the NAACP has launched an online petition calling for federal charges in the Trayvon Martin case.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
